'Love Crimes of Kabul' is an intimate portrait of three young Afghani women accused of committing “moral crimes” such as premarital sex and running away from home. As we follow them from prison to trial, we discover the pressures and paradoxes that women in Afghanistan face today—and the dangerous consequences when they refuse to fit in. In Kabul, Afghanistan’s central woman’s prison, nearly half the prisoners are young women imprisoned for the “moral crimes” of premarital sex, adultery, or running away from their husband and home. Many are teens and early twenty-somethings. Their crimes—from midnight trysts with their boyfriends to escaping abusive arranged marriages and abusive father’s homes—would be condoned in the West. Yet in Afghanistan’s shame-based society, where behavior is strictly controlled by an ideology of honor, and transgression can bring ruin to an entire family, their willful actions have much more serious consequences. Their actions are seen as threats to the very fabric of society, and eighteen and twenty-year olds face up to fifteen years imprisonment. Nine years after the fall of the Taliban, in a society where seeds of change are sprouting but the strict moral and legal codes of Sharia Family Law still apply, Iranian-American filmmaker Tanaz Eshaghian meets the woman who are charged with committing the 'Love Crimes of Kabul'. We soon learn that in Badum Bagh, teenage romantics must become swiftly learn to become steely-eyed negotiators. To secure any kind of future, they’ll have to broker their own freedom with courage and skill.
