[edit] Information
Sathnam Sanghera explores the ongoing legacy of the British empire on the modern UK. Chapter 1: Sathnam starts by looking at how contemporary racism is rooted in a historic sense of exceptionalism. He uncovers the stories of Sikh soldiers who fought in the First World War only to be disregarded when their service was over - and discovers disturbing parallels with the treatment of soldiers from Commonwealth countries today. Chapter 2: Sathnam explains how misunderstanding Imperial history can lead to a confusion of British national identity, fuelling modern-day political conflicts. Sathnam travels back to his hometown of Wolverhampton to meet the headmaster of his grammar school and a new generation of pupils eager to learn the history of Empire that Sathnam wishes he was taught.
