Kabuki often depicts traditional Japanese dishes. Actor Kataoka Ainosuke introduces scenes with several examples, and teaches us about what foods were popular in the Edo period. In "Hokaibo," a disreputable begging priest takes time off from abducting a beautiful girl for a bowl of soba noodles from a roadside stall.

A roadside stall selling a kind of Oden with tofu or vegetable on skewers topped with miso sauce is the scene of plotting that leads to robbing the shogun's treasury of thousands of gold coins.

The head of a gang of thieves has time while arresting officers are trying to capture him to eat a meal ending with Ochazuke, a bowl of rice and pickles with hot green tea poured over it.
