[edit] Information

Exiles at home, the generations of family depicted in the documentary “A World Not Ours” live in Lebanon without completely being part of it. This affecting, humor-tinged debut feature from Mahdi Fleifel goes back to the old neighborhood in southern Lebanon: the refugee camp Ain al-Helweh, a Palestinian pocket of hemmed-in buildings and stifled hopes. Some 70,000 people live there as foreigners under an arrangement dating from 1948, and Mr. Fleifel spent summers there after moving with his family to Denmark. That gives him a privileged perspective shaded by some of the hand-wringing of an absentee. His video chronicles check in with personalities he knew and loved, from his pioneering grandfather to his best friend, whose complex political engagement seems superseded by doldrums.
