[edit] Information
In a unique experiment we will challenge 21st century men to re-live one of the greatest feats of maritime adventure and endurance in naval history. In 1789, Captain Bligh and a handful of loyal men were forced into a tiny open boat and left to die in the middle of the South Pacific after the infamous Mutiny on the Bounty. They managed to navigate 4000 miles through some of the world's most remote and unforgiving seas to the nearest safe haven - a Dutch trading post in Timor. It remains one of the greatest survival feats in British history. Now 9 men are setting out to make the same gruelling voyage in a replica 23ft wooden boat, with the same rations, facing the same conditions - to measure themselves against history. For company, they will have Bligh's own words in the form of a detailed Journal he kept which remarkably survived the voyage. The Journal will help them uncover the secrets of survival and to get a closer understanding of Bligh's epic feat. The men bring skills that mirror those of Bligh's crew. Amongst them are a carpenter, a doctor, and several specialist sailors. Anthony Middleton, of SAS: Who Dares Wins is stepping into Captain Bligh's shoes as leader of the expedition. Like Bligh's men they will battle brutal storms and treacherous reefs. They will brave the furnace of Northern Australia's shark infested waters, and the challenge of landing on remote tropical islands to hunt for vital supplies. The crew will be constantly challenged by raging seas, hunger, and the confined space of the boat. There an old nautical saying, "When ships were made of wood, men were made of steel". But can today's men measure up to the extraordinary achievements of their predecessors? ISLANDS VISITED ON THE VOYAGE Start: Tonga Yadua (Fiji) Gaua (Vanuatu) Restoration Island (Australia) Sunday Island (Australia) Albany Island (Australia) Finish: Timor Windfall Films and GroupM Entertainment Production for Channel 4 Television
[edit] Part 1
Nine men set out to recreate the 4000 mile journey of Captain Bligh in a tiny wooden boat after the legendary mutiny on the Bounty. Anthony Middleton steps into Bligh's shoes, but can today's men match up to the achievements of their predecessors?
Hopelessly Lost: When Captain William Bligh and his followers were abandoned by mutineers on a Pacific launch nearly 230 years ago, it was essentially a death sentence. But the hard-boiled sailors did not want to surrender to this cruel fate. Instead, they traveled thousands of kilometers in their tiny boat at sea, struggling to survive until they were totally exhausted. Are Ant Middleton and his eight companions cut from the same cloth as the famous role models?
[edit] Part 2
The men explore a tropical island and hunt for vital food and water. Pressures of hunger and the intensity of life on such a small boat start to set in and a mutiny threatens to break out on the boat.
Ant Middleton and his companions have been sailing the Pacific Ocean for six days now and the men in their small boat have successfully weathered the first storm. But on board the drinking water is scarce. That's why the adventurers set course for the Fiji Islands to stock up on supplies there. Crew member Luke also treats the injuries of his fellow travellers during the stopover. The trained physician has to make do with similarly primitive means as the ship's doctor on the "Bounty" did back then.
[edit] Part 3
Alone in their tiny wooden boat, the eight remaining men face the most challenging leg of their journey so far: 1600 miles across the treacherous Coral Sea.
Cane sugar, bananas, pineapples and fresh drinking water: Ant Middleton and his crew have stocked up on provisions in the island state of Vanuatu and – like Captain William Bligh and his sailors almost 230 years ago – are setting course for Restoration Island off the north coast of Australia. For one team member, however, the Bounty-Experiment is already over: carpenter Ben had to give up because of his infected hand. And on the small boat, the remaining eight adventurers don't have an ounce of privacy. This circumstance creates tension.
[edit] Part 4
After two weeks with no sight of land, the remaining men must find a way through the Great Barrier Reef. If they get it wrong, the coral could rip the bottom off their tiny wooden boat.
400 calories/man must suffice as a daily ration, because that's all Captain William Bligh and his sailors had at their disposal in their feat on the ocean almost 320 years ago. Accordingly, the stomach growls for Ant Middleton and his crew before the most difficult stage of their sea voyage. In this episode, the men set course for the Great Barrier Reef off the north coast of Australia. And navigating this treacherous maze of coral and sandbars requires absolute concentration.
[edit] Part 5
The final leg of the journey isn't plain sailing; they are once again at the mercy of the weather, and when the winds slow so too does their progress. The men face their most desperate challenge yet: life-threatening dehydration, as the finish line appears to be exasperatingly out of reach. Will they all make it to Captain Bligh's final destination?
If the wind is favorable, they only have to hold out for eight to ten days: With this message, William Bligh breathed new life into his starving and exhausted sailors on the ocean in 1789. So is written in the surviving notes of the British captain. Is Ant Middleton a similarly good motivator? The ex-soldier and his companions have completed a murderous sea voyage that has put the crew's will to survive to the test. But the saving port on the island of Timor has not yet been reached.
